COUNTERMEASURES for DRUG DEPENDENCE

Repetitive abuse of narcotics, methamphetamine and other drugs will produce drug dependence. It is difficult to overcome craving for drugs caused by dependence, and further continued abuse will lead to physical and mental disorders, i.e. chronic drug addiction.

For recovering from drug dependence and addiction, it is necessary to receive treatments in medical institutions and support in acquiring skills to live without drug abuse.

As one of the five objectives under the Government’s Drug Abuse Prevention Strategy, counter-drug abuse measures have various programs for ex-drug users convicted of drug abuse.
Since August 2011, Narcotics Control Department has held Relapse Prevention Programs for first offenders given a suspended sentence without probation and their supporters including their families.

Narcotics Control Department also introduced a self-study textbook on drug abuse relapse prevention, called “MATORICSS” (MATORI Course book for Self-Study) for Narcotics Agents to enhance support to ex-drug users and their families for ex-drug users’ rehabilitation and reintegration in society. We welcome to our Relapse Prevention Programs those who seriously wish to stay away from drugs. Narcotics Control Department believes that its strength as a specialized drug control agency should contribute to ex-drug users’ successful rehabilitation.
