From global drug crimes, to misconducts of medical practitioners, all drug-related crimes will be busted through tactical operations and a broad intelligence network.
Narcotics Agents perform their duties in the capacity as judicial police officers under the Criminal Procedure Law, under the supervision of the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare. We are entitled to handle crimes under the six drug-related laws listed in the box on the right (with regard to the Law on Securing Quality, Efficacy and Safety of Products Including Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices, crimes related to “designated substances” only); crimes under Chapter 14 “Opium-related Crimes” in the Title 2 of Penal Code; as well as crimes committed by drug addicts. Narcotics Agents also cooperate with associated organizations, such as prefectural Police, Japan Customs and Japan Cost Guard, striving to seize drugs being smuggled into Japan from overseas. At the same time, the efforts are being made to confiscate drug crime proceeds and arrest kingpins through controlled delivery. Additionally, through making effective use of our technical expertise, Narcotics Agents investigate diversion and abuse of medicines by medical practitioners as well as Internet-based drug crimes across regions and countries.
